Lesson Plan for teaching FRUITS to 6th Grade students in primary school in Indonesian context

LESSON PLAN

1st Meeting


Topic:

Fruit

Aims:

·         To increase students’ knowledge of subject content.
·         To develop students’ knowledge of content-related lexis.
·         To develop students’ skills in Listening, reading and speaking.
·         To provide material and information for further topic and language based studies.

Introduction

This topic and accompanying tasks/ activities offers the teacher(s) and students the opportunity to develop both content and language knowledge to an appropriate depth over a single lesson or a series of class hours.

Procedure

1.      Lead in (5-10 minutes)
-          The teacher tells the students that they are going to read a text and to watch a short video conversation about fruit price in a market. (See material sheet number 1)
-          The students brainstorm the topic (in groups or onto the board). The teacher elicits/teaches basic information (Ask students’ favorite food and fruits usually made as juice).
-          Students predict the fruits usually made as juice.
2.      Task 1: Reading textbook (15-20 minutes)
-          Students are asked to read the textbook. (If some students do not bring their textbook, ask them to find friends who want to share their textbooks).
-          Students will repeat the conversation on the textbook after the teacher. (See the material sheet number 2)
-          Some students are asked to go in front of the classroom to do the role-play.

3.      Task 3: Practicing conversation (15-20 minutes)
-          Students will practice the conversation on the textbook with the friends next to them.
-          Some students are asked to go in front of the classroom to do the role-play.

4.      Watching a short video conversation (10-15 minutes)
-          Students will watch a short conversation video provided by the teacher three time.
-          Students will repeat after the character in the video provided three times.

5.      Follow up activities (5-10 minutes)
-          Students are asked to bring some color pencil/color markers/crayon and 3 flashcards for the next activities.
-          Closing time by

NOTE:

-          When the activities are not done well, the rest activities can be done in the following meetings.


















2nd meeting

Introduction

Procedure

1.      Lead in (5-10 minutes)
-          The teacher tell the students that they will continue the previous meeting topic about ‘fruit’.
-          Students are asked to remember the fruits they mentioned as their favorite and fruits usually made as juice (teacher will write the fruits on the board).

2.      Task 1: Preparing times (5-10 minutes)
-          Students are being checked of what they are asked to bring (some color pencil/color markers/crayon/watercolors and 3 flashcards).
-          Students are supposed to show their utensils on the table.

3.      Task 2: Drawing fruits (15-20 minutes)
-          Students are asked to draw their 3 favorite fruits juice on each flashcards they have and coloring them.
-          Students are not allowed to borrow friends’.
-          The teacher will monitor the classroom, helping the students in doing the activities.


4.      Task 3: Speaking practice (15-20 minutes)
-          Students will repeat the conversation on the letter read after the teacher. (The blanks can be filled with any fruits drew by the students). (See the conversation on assessment sheet number 1)
-          Students are asked to look at the letters provided by the teacher and fill in the blanks with the name of 3 fruits they drew.
-          Students have to practice the conversation with their partners.

5.      Follow up activities (5-10 minutes)
-          Students will collect their drawing
-          The teacher tell the students that they have to implement the conversation they learned in the real life.
-          Closing time

NOTE: 

If the activities are done before the learning time end, teacher can ask some students to perform the conversation in the classroom.
